What we will be working on 12/14-12/23

Out of the Longman Keystone B textbook we will be finishing up "Ali, Child of the Desert" and then we will begin the last reading in the unit 1. Reading 4 "Water and Living Things" which is about the water cycle and the distribution of water on Earth. During the reading of this nonfiction text students will be completing a KWL chart, learning key words and academic words, word study of spelling long a, practicing a new reading strategy of identifying main idea and details, complete a guided reading of the text, answer comprehension questions, pratice reading for fluency, learn about cause and effect, practice subject verb agreement in simple present tense, and writing a descriptive paragraph describing an event or experience using a graphic organizer of transition words. 
This reading and its activities will go into the week after break. The DINs, workbook, guided reading questions, and other worksheets that go along with the activities will be the formative assessments. The essay and quiz will be the summative assessments. 

Please use quizlet.com to study for the reading, all of the key words, academic words, and vocabulary words will be on it with an accompanying picture to help with understanding.

What We Will Be Working On 11/30-12/4

Out of the Longman Keystone B textbook we will be working on Unit 1 Reading 3 "Ali, Child of the Desert" by Jonathan London

This is a short story about a boy who lives in Morocco, on the edge of the Sahara Desert. The story reveals what kind of challenges people living in the desert face. It also illustrates the resources found in the desert. This section also includes a poem introducing the concept of desert woman as long term survivors.

Students will be reading/listening to this story aloud and complete a guided reading as they read. When they are finished reading the poem they will be performing a reader's theater based off the short story, answering comprehension questions, and discussing the story using higher order questioning to guide their discussions.

Toward the end of reading 3 section students will be working with the grammar point of using simple and compound sentences.

Finally they will be synthesizing all the vocabulary, knowledge of the desert, and grammar points into a graphic organizer to write an essay to show me what they have learned.

Textbook Used in Transitioning ENL

For our Transitioning ENL stand alone we will be working in the Longman Keystone B Textbook.

Welcome and Introduction!

Hello!

I am pleased to introduce myself as the 9th grade ESL teacher. I Co-teach ELA with Mrs. Williams 5th period and I teach a stand alone ESL 3rd period on days 2 and 4. During the 73 minutes students read silently and complete a summary of what they read daily which will be collected and graded weekly. Then in class we are reading a novel everyday called Swallowing Stones. Students learn key vocabulary words and write them down so they remember them. These words help with fluency and help students become Regents ready. After every 11 words students will have a quiz on the vocabulary. After reading we hold a class discussion with key discussion questions that help with comprehension. In class we also talk about the characters, plot, and setting. Students have at least one homework assignment a week which requires them to read for 30 minutes 4 nights a week and then write a 5 sentence summary of what they read. The homework will also be graded at the end of each week.

For the ENL stand alone we are working out of a language supported textbook called Keystone level B. This book has readings about Science, Math, Social Studies, and ELA topics. In this book we review and learn new vocabulary, practice reading strategies, discuss comprehension questions, and complete a writing activity. Each piece of classwork is grade for completion but as the year goes on it will be graded for content more and more. I encourage all students to try to write or discuss an answer this is the best way to practice the language.

With the way our program is set up the students stay with the same group of students all day long. Because the students are not exposed to native English speakers they must speak English in class as much as possible. I also strongly encourage students to practice the language they learn at school, at home with you.
